The Dr. Lothar Beyer Prize has been awarded every two to three years since the year 2008. It is one of the few – and also the most richly endowed – research awards in the field of general practice research in Germany.

The most recent call for applications took place in 2016. The prizes were awarded to a total of six winners in three categories, and additionally one for young researchers. The prize money amounted to € 37,000. The prizes are financed by the Dr. Lothar Beyer Foundation under the umbrella of DESAM, and along with other sponsors from the field of medicine (but not pharmaceutical companies). In the field of research support, the award has now gained a reputation that award winners can refer to when applying for research funding.
